Cybersecurity in Baltimore

Security built for how Baltimore does business

Baltimore sits between two of the country’s most security-intensive employers: the world-renowned hospitals and research institutions in the city itself, and Fort Meade to the south, home to the National Security Agency and U.S. Cyber Command. Around them have grown cyber firms in Columbia and Annapolis Junction, contractors along the BWI corridor, and the shipping and logistics companies that work the Port of Baltimore.

The 2019 ransomware attack on the city’s government showed the region how long recovery can take when systems aren’t ready. StrikeProof helps Baltimore-area businesses avoid that position: penetration testing to find weak points first, 24/7 SOC monitoring to catch intrusions early, readiness work for CMMC, HIPAA and Maryland’s strict new privacy law, and incident response that begins the moment you call.

The local threat landscape

What Baltimore businesses are up against

Attackers go where the money and the data are. In the Baltimore area, these are the threats we see shaped by the local economy.

Ransomware against healthcare

Hospitals, research labs and medical practices can’t pause patient care, which is why ransomware crews target them and why recovery plans have to be tested before they’re needed.

Intelligence-community supply chain

Contractors around Fort Meade and the BWI corridor are targeted by state-backed groups looking for a way into classified-adjacent programs and the people who work on them.

Port and logistics fraud

Shipping, customs and freight businesses process high-value payments with many outside parties, ideal ground for spoofed emails and altered banking details.

MODPA
Breach and privacy law in Maryland

Maryland pairs AG-first breach notice with one of the strictest privacy laws

Maryland requires businesses to notify the Attorney General before notifying affected residents, and to notify residents no later than 45 days after discovering a breach. The Maryland Online Data Privacy Act, in effect since October 1, 2025, goes further than most state privacy laws: it limits collection of personal data to what’s reasonably necessary, restricts sensitive data to what’s strictly necessary, and bans the sale of sensitive data outright. It applies to businesses that process the data of 35,000 or more Maryland consumers, or fewer if they earn significant revenue from selling it. Your attorney can tell you whether it reaches your business.

Baltimore FAQ

Cybersecurity in Baltimore: common questions

We’re a small contractor near Fort Meade. What security will our customers expect?
At minimum, the NIST SP 800-171 controls behind CMMC if you handle Controlled Unclassified Information, and often more from primes in the intelligence community. We help you scope what applies, implement and test the controls and prepare for assessment. Certification itself comes from an authorized assessor.
What does MODPA’s data minimization rule mean in practice?
It means collecting and keeping only the personal data you need for the service you provide, and much less for sensitive data. Your attorney should interpret it for your business; we can help you find where personal data is stored across your systems and secure or remove what shouldn’t be there.
We think we’ve been breached. How fast can you help a Baltimore business?
Call our 24/7 incident response line at +1 (253) 448-3030. We’re remote-first, so we begin containment and forensics over secure remote access within minutes of your call, with no waiting for someone to drive to your office.
Do you offer penetration testing for Baltimore companies?
Yes. We test external and internal networks, web applications, cloud environments and your people (phishing), and deliver a prioritized report your team can act on, followed by a retest once fixes are in.
Does it matter that StrikeProof isn’t based in Baltimore?
Not for the work we do. Monitoring, testing, compliance and incident response are all delivered over secure remote connections, so a business in the Baltimore area gets the same team, the same speed and the same price as one next door to our Tacoma headquarters.
