Cybersecurity in New York

Security built for how New York does business

Few cities concentrate as much valuable data in as few square miles as New York. Banks and hedge funds in Midtown and the Financial District, insurers and brokers, law firms handling deals before they’re public, and the media and advertising companies of Hudson Square all hold information criminals can sell or use to move markets. Attackers don’t need to break into a trading floor; a convincing email to the right assistant, or a help desk call that resets the right password, is usually enough.

New York also regulates security more closely than almost anywhere in the country. If your firm is licensed by the Department of Financial Services, Part 500 sets specific controls, a 72-hour notice clock and an annual compliance filing. Everyone else answers to the SHIELD Act. StrikeProof helps New York businesses meet both with penetration testing that finds the real gaps, 24/7 monitoring that catches intrusions while they’re small, and the documentation examiners and clients expect to see.

Banking, insurance and asset management

NYDFS Part 500 controls and certification, penetration testing examiners expect, and 24/7 monitoring of privileged accounts.

Law firms

Protection for privileged and deal-sensitive files, defense against wire fraud, and answers to the security questionnaires corporate clients send.

Media, advertising and tech

Account takeover defense for shared cloud and social accounts, SOC 2 readiness and testing of client-facing applications.

Real estate and property management

Email security against closing and rent fraud, protection for tenant and payment data, and a rehearsed response plan.

The local threat landscape

What New York businesses are up against

Attackers go where the money and the data are. In the New York City area, these are the threats we see shaped by the local economy.

Business email compromise and wire fraud

Attackers watch a compromised mailbox for weeks, then step into a closing, a capital call or a vendor payment with new wiring instructions. Real estate, legal and financial firms move enough money to make the wait worthwhile.

Help desk and identity attacks

Social engineering crews call IT pretending to be an employee locked out of their account, talk their way into an MFA reset, then move quickly through single sign-on into email, files and cloud consoles.

Third-party and vendor breaches

Financial and professional firms share data with fund administrators, file-transfer tools, payroll providers and outside counsel. A breach at any of them can become your notification problem.

72 hours
Breach and privacy law in New York

New York runs two clocks: the SHIELD Act and NYDFS Part 500

Under the SHIELD Act, every business holding New York residents’ private information must keep reasonable safeguards and, since a 2024 amendment, notify affected residents within 30 days of discovering a breach, with notice also going to the Attorney General and other state agencies. Firms licensed by the Department of Financial Services face more: Part 500 requires notifying DFS within 72 hours of determining that a reportable cybersecurity event occurred, multi-factor authentication for remote and privileged access, regular testing, and an annual certification or acknowledgment of compliance. Fast detection is what makes a 72-hour clock possible.

New York FAQ

Cybersecurity in New York: common questions

We’re an insurance agency licensed by DFS. Does Part 500 really apply to a firm our size?
Part 500 applies to DFS licensees of every size, though smaller firms may qualify for limited exemptions that remove some requirements but not all. Your attorney or compliance counsel should confirm which exemptions you can claim; we implement and document the controls that still apply, from MFA to penetration testing, so your annual filing is backed by evidence.
Can you test whether our help desk would fall for a social engineering call?
Yes. As part of a social engineering assessment we can call your help desk posing as an employee, with your written authorization, and test whether identity checks hold up before a password or MFA reset. You get a clear report on what worked and how to tighten the process.
We think we’ve been breached. How fast can you help a New York business?
Call our 24/7 incident response line at +1 (253) 448-3030. We’re remote-first, so we begin containment and forensics over secure remote access within minutes of your call, with no waiting for someone to drive to your office.
Do you offer penetration testing for New York companies?
Yes. We test external and internal networks, web applications, cloud environments and your people (phishing), and deliver a prioritized report your team can act on, followed by a retest once fixes are in.
Does it matter that StrikeProof isn’t based in New York?
Not for the work we do. Monitoring, testing, compliance and incident response are all delivered over secure remote connections, so a business in the New York City area gets the same team, the same speed and the same price as one next door to our Tacoma headquarters.
